I feel the need to say a few things about this project. But first, I should start off by saying that I have always been a huge fan of "the song", and, in particular, a great lyric. More so than a fine melody or an infectious groove, or the wildly elusive (and over-rated) "hook," а great story and creative wordplay have always been my first love. Guys like Dan Fogelberg, Jackson Browne, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Neal Peart, James Taylor, John Denver... I could go on and on. These guys are, first and foremost, storytellers. They used words like paint on canvas and the music flows out of their imagery. Their lyrics never feel forced into the confines of a melody or rhythm, either. It always felt like a very organic relationship to me. So as a songwriter, the bar they set is the one I have always tried to reach. In that regard, I am awfully proud of the tracks on this disc and terribly excited to share it with you. Not just because I am happy with how the individual songs turned out, but because of the way they work together as a whole to tell another, entirely different (and to be honest, unanticipated) story. Each of these songs were written for very specific events over the course of the last several years. At this point, these songs are not new. Some go as far back as 2011. But when I started to compile them for release, it became apparent to me that this was going to be something special. I don't feel wrong in saying that this is one of those instances where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Each song here is worth more in the context of the others than any of them are individually. So if you have this, and you have the chance, and are so inclined, I hope you will take the time to sit down with a bottle of wine and take this in from top to bottom. It becomes the story of a life... and a teensy bit autobiographical, at that. This was not by design. I can't claim it, but I'll take it.

STAR TREK: LIVE ON STAGE thrilled fans in downtown Springfield, Missouri from 2011 to 2013. It was a labor of love and dedication. Each month, "A Class Act Productions" produced an entirely new, often slapstick, sometimes bintersweet, parody episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. At the heart of it all though, was the original music composed and performed by David Greathouse. At the beginning of each episode, he played "The Prime Directive (Back in the Day)". It's a nostalgic piece that reminds the listener of sitting in front of the TV as a child, watching our gallant ship and crew prove week after week that, while the program may sometimes be broadcast in black and white, life, culture, and the core of our very humaniry is never as cut and dried. This silly show, full of blinking lights and cardboard sets, allows us, as all good science fiction does, to observe the human condition from a much broader perspective. As you listen to these songs, keep the individual stories they're based on in mind. Remember Kirk's pain and hurt as he was forced to kill his friend, Gary Mitchell, on Delta Vega. Think about how fun it was watching our heroes battle the Klingons! Remember the grief and agony of our brave captain, as duty required him to sacrifice the woman he loved with all his heart. A sacrifice required in order to undo a rift in the fabric of time/space, which set our universe right again, but left a rend of much larger proportions in his very soul. Piease enjoy these original songs created for STAR TREK: LIVE ON STAGE, and remember that while our show was a parody, its spirit will always be a loving homage to a cultural phenomenon that made us examine ourselves and our hearts. ~ Timothy Piland

Parody scripts adapted, extended and twisted to our liking by the tireless Michael Frizell. Someday, we’ll buy him tires.

Here we have are a couple of different versions of these songs that were never released into the wild... but they SHOULD HAVE BEEN. This version of Dance on the Moon includes Seth's aunt Connie, which is a really nice touch, in my opinion. Seth and I did a lot of recording together back in the day, as a matter of fact, I originally wrote The Sound That Love Makes for him to do. His version of that song here just slays me to this day, and my piano playing wasn't too bad either. The cover art has got to be one of the most epic things ever ( my wife is really a wonderful photographer), and the cello just seals the deal. It makes me very happy to finally set these free. I hope you enjoy them!

In 2014 I had the great pleasure of being cast in Missouri State University's student web series, A Little Help. During the course of that production I ended up writing and recording a whole lot of music for the score, and the main theme song. A lot of it was used, and a lot of it wasn't. This is everything I recorded for that series, including the tracks which ultimately did not make the cut. One of them that was not used (Beth & Ringo) was retitled and re-recorded and is included on The Sound That Love Makes. So just for the sake of posterity and my own selfish need to share, have yourself A little Help!
